What was studied?

The review draws together evidence on how manipulation activates muscle spindles, Golgi tendon organs and Pacinian corpuscles, the sensory receptors that detect stretch, tension and pressure, during the fast, precise forces used in a thrust.

What did they find?

Muscle spindle discharge rates increased by around 201% during the thrust phase of a manipulation, producing a brief, intense, synchronised burst of sensory signal from the treated area. This burst may trigger lasting changes in nerve communication.
