What was studied?

The guidance sets out effective radiation doses in millisieverts for lumbar, cervical and thoracic spine X-rays, expressed as an equivalent period of natural background radiation, alongside a lifetime cancer risk estimate.

What did they find?

A lumbar spine X-ray delivers about 1.3 mSv, roughly 7 months of natural background radiation, while a cervical X-ray is far lower at 0.08 mSv, about 2 weeks. The estimated additional lifetime cancer risk from a lumbar X-ray is around 1 in 15,000.

Why it matters

For most spinal X-rays, the radiation dose is a small fraction of what a person is naturally exposed to over the course of a year regardless. This gives real, measurable context for a scan.
