This randomised, single-blind study measured blood chemistry changes in healthy volunteers immediately after spinal manipulation, to see whether manipulation produces measurable biological effects beyond how a patient simply reports feeling afterward.

What was studied?

30 healthy participants were split into cervical manipulation, thoracic manipulation and non-manipulation control groups. Blood levels of neurotensin, oxytocin, cortisol and orexin A, chemicals linked to pain modulation and stress response, were measured after treatment.

What did they find?

Both manipulation groups showed significantly increased neurotensin and oxytocin immediately after treatment, with cortisol rising specifically in the cervical group. These differences had disappeared by the two-hour mark, and orexin A showed no change.

Why it matters

This is genuine evidence that spinal manipulation triggers real, measurable biological changes in the body's pain and stress chemistry, showing the effect is not simply placebo or a purely psychological response.
